GAME REPORT BY COACH PHIL ANDERS:
Tuesday night's games at Urbana HS were full of action at both ends, but in the end
it was Urbana HS that got the lucky bounce a few more times than Uni HS did. The
first game with the varsity squads started out as a physical battle, with both teams
unable to maintain possession for a substantial amount of time. The first break on
this cold and windy night, came 14 minutes into the game, as Urbana HS, with the
wind at their backs, converted on a corner kick. Even with the wind not in our
favor, we were able to move the ball upfield and attack the Urbana goal, and were
unlucky with a number of chances. These missed opportunities prevailed against us.
With the game still 1-0 early in the second half, and both teams fighting a physical
battle for possession of the ball, we were called for a questionable impeding call,
in which we had possession of the ball and cleared it before the call was made.
Following the missed free kick, which positioned Urbana in our half, we were unable
to clear the ball a second time from our penalty area, and Urbana capitalized. 2-0.
We continued to attack the oppositions goal without any luck. Our ball possession
was slightly off, and the shot selection did little to challenge the Urbana goal
keeper.
The JV game played out in a similar fashion to the first game. Our Uni JV had a
physical battle for possession, which placed us for most of the game in the Urbana
JV half. We created chances in front of the goal, but could not finish. Urbana's
counterattack, similar to the varsity game, disrupted our ability to build a solid
attack. The best chance for Urbana came at the end of the half, which forced Uni
goal keeper Sherri Grill to make a fantastic one-on-one save. This continued well
into the second half, as Uni attacked, with forward Katie Buzard having a number of
chances that could not quite connect. Laura Sligar, Uni's second half goal keeper,
was also forced into a couple of one-on-one breakaway saves, which seemed to be the
only means that Urbana could move the ball out of their own half. However, in the
end, it was one of these counterattacking runs that had Urbana's left forward
scoring the winning goal in the last 3 minutes of the game.
