GAME REPORT BY COACH PHIL ANDERS:
In quite a turn-around from last year, when we played Charleston to a 1-1 tie at
half, only to give up 6 goals in the second half, for a 1-7 loss, Uni girl's soccer
team had the upper hand this year, winning convincingly, 3-1. We were able to
contain Charleston goal scoring threat, Molly Ball, who had something to do with
almost every goal scored in last year's game. Freshman, Amanda Hwu, starting her
first varsity game, contained Ball for the duration of the game. Sarah Pfander had a
fabulous game in goal, coming off her line to make key saves in the air. The first
goal came in the 14th minute, as a Joy Shapley cross from the left side found Erika
Belmont in front of the goal, and Erika made sure the ball was well placed in the
back of the net. The second goal for Uni happened in the final seconds of the first
half, as Shara Esbenshade controlled a ball in the air off her chest, and volleyed
the ball to the top of the Charleston box. Waiting there was Joy Shapley, who one
timed the descending ball with her left foot, just out of reach of the Charleston
keeper, as the ball bounced just inside the post. 2-0 UNI. Starting the second half
against the wind did not seem to phase Uni, as Erika Belmont raced to the corner of
the Charleston end with the ball in the 56th minute, only to cross the ball to Suran
Yoo, in front of the goal, who quickly found Michelle Wong to finish the play. 3-0
UNI. Charleston got a late goal to end the scoring for the varsity game. FINAL: UNI
3, CHARLESTON 1

The JV squad game that followed had a similar look to the varsity game, as a number
of Charleston players also played on the JV squad. This played out as such, when
following an early goal by Charleston, Kristen Elsila, who scored the lone goal for
Charleston in the varsity game, placed a direct kick, just outside the UNI penalty
box, perfectly into the upper corner of the UNI goal. 0-2 Charleston. The UNI JV
created many chances, and finally in the 57th minute, a great buildup from within
their own half found center forward Revathi Maturi near midfield. Maturi collected
the ball and moved upfield in the midst of no less than 3 Charleston defenders, and
played an excellent through pass to a speeding Katie Buzard, who finished just
inside the Charlestion penalty box. FINAL: UNI JV 1, CHARLESTON JV 2
