COACH'S REPORT BY PHIL ANDERS:
One goal, two minutes before halftime in the varsity squad game, was all that was
necessary to see the Uni soccer team win its fifth game of the season. Playing into
a strong wind in the first half, Uni's opponent, Decatur St. Teresa, was unable to
effectively challenge the Uni goal keeper, Sarah Pfander, who recorded her third
shutout of the season. The Uni attack produced a number of chances in front of the
St. Teresa goal without an effective finish. Finally, a well played ball into the
penalty area from midfielder Shara Esbenshade was skillfully controlled by forward
Suran Yoo, who setup the ball perfectly for the attacking center mid, Michelle Wong.
Wong's shot was unstoppable. UNI 1-0. While we faced the wind in the second half,
and St. Teresa produced a more effective attack, the Uni players held together well,
and were able to maintain possession of the ball. Finally, the clock ran out on St.
Teresa's late game surge. FINAL: UNI (1) - ST. TERESA (0)
The junior varsity game had a bit more action from both sides, with both teams
moving end to end. Again, Uni produced a number of shots in front of the St. Teresa
goal, while on the other end, the solid defensive play by Emily Chu, Marika Iyer,
and Natsuki Nakamura helped keep the first half fairly quiet for goal keeper Sheri
Grill. Uni goal scoring threats from Revathi Maturi, Katie Buzard, Isaure Hostetter,
and Eleni Yannelis kept the spectators in anticipation of a goal to break the tie,
but the ball just could not find the back of the net for either team. FINAL: UNI (0)
- ST. TERESA (0)
