GAME REPORT BY COACH PHIL ANDERS
The second conference game of the season for our Uni soccer team started out very
similar to the two previous games -- our opponent rarely ventured into our half of
the field; and we could not find the back of the net. This only changed with two
minutes left in the half, when a ball handled in the Decatur Christian penalty area
setup Michelle Wong for her fifth goal of the season. However, similar to the
previous games, only 1-0 difference at half.
Then, as if a figurative light bulb was turned on, the Uni attack produced 5 goals,
into a head wind, in 15 minutes of second half play. A beautiful passing frenzy that
showcased a skillful build up from the middle of the field, to the left wing, had
Joy Shapley sending a ball across the DC goal with Suran Yoo charging in at the back
post to begin the flood of scoring less than a minute into the second half. Joy
Shapley continued to take advantage of the space on the left wing by scoring on a
penetrating pass from Michelle Wong, and assisting a fourth, finding Erika Belmont
in front of the goal. Erika then teamed up with Suran Yoo for her second goal of the
night, while starting goal keeper, Sarah Pfander, seeing some field time at a
central mid position, made good on a back pass from Beth Peregrine inside the
Decatur penalty box. Uni continued to control the game in the Decatur Christian half
for the remainder of the game, however, Uni goal keeper, Laura Sligar, was
challenged in the 71st minute when a foul in the Uni penalty box gave Decatur
Christian a chance to get on the scoreboard. Diving to her right, Sligar made a
fabulous save to preserve the shutout.
