GAME REPORT BY COACH PHIL ANDERS

The Uni girls soccer teams traveled to Mattoon for what turned out to be two well
matched games, yet neither Uni team was able to come away with a win. The junior
varsity went down early in the game, 1-0, but Revathi Maturi, a freshman who looks
to have a bright future with Uni soccer and is creating many scoring chances for her
team, found Larissa Pittenger in front of the Mattoon goal. However, too many trips
up and down the field, and not enough protecting possession of the ball from the Uni
team, gave Mattoon an advantage early in the second half, as three goals in 13
minutes finished the scoring for the game. FINAL: Mattoon JV (4) - Uni JV (1)

The varsity contest showed a more up-tempo and more physical version of the JV
match. However, a battle for possession in the middle of the field, and weak shot
selection at both ends had neither team being able to claim an advantage. The only
difference in the game was a goal from a direct kick just outside the Uni penalty
area by Mattoon's Cindy Lira, after the Uni goal keeper was called for reaching over
the line to handling the ball. Outstanding play by Uni defenders, Amanda Hwu and
Chelsea Freeland kept Mattoon's top scorer, Lira, in check for most of the game,
with Lira receiving a yellow card in the first half after an air battle with
Freeland. In the end, Mattoon won the game on the solo direct kick by Lira.
