GAME REPORT BY COACH PHIL ANDERS
Uni and St. Thomas More girls soccer teams faced off in two exciting matches on a
sunny April afternoon today.
A cross wind made things interesting, and it appeared the Uni varsity was prepared
to score early, as the attack oriented play pinned St. Thomas More in their own
defensive end. 15 minutes into the game, an STM defender was called for handling the
ball in the penalty area. However, Uni's Michelle Wong could not convert the PK, and
it was the STM counterattack that finally produced the first goal with 5 minutes
remaining in the half. Uni came out charged in the second half, but still had a
difficult time consistently building up play for any real scoring attempts. With 6
minutes to play, Joy Shapley made an aggressive move between two defenders from her
left mid-field position, and released a perfect cross across the STM goal where a
darting center forward, Suran Yoo, was able to bury the ball in the back of the net.
FINAL: UNI (1) ST THOMAS MORE (1)
The junior varsity game started out with the STM team scoring in the first 2
minutes, but this group of Uni players has not let any team this season off easily.
By the 16th minute, continued pressure by the Uni attack forced an own goal by the
STM defense, and tied the score at 1-1. With two minutes left in the half, Revathi
Maturi broke in behind the STM defensive line, and found Lily Smith near the goal to
finish. Putting Uni up 2-1 before the half. The second half started off as a battle
for possession, and continued for 20 minutes before St. Thomas More capitalized on a
rebound off the Uni goalpost. The tie was short lived, as Revathi Maturi, again,
pressured the STM defense only to find Emma Coverdill to complete the attack, and
put the ball securely in the back of the net for the win. FINAL: UNI JV (3) STM JV
