The Uni girls soccer team got back on track in a tough game against
Warrensburg-Latham, the #2 seed in the Williamsville sectional bracket. Uni is
seeded #4 in the same bracket. The action hovered around the middle of the field for
the first 10 minutes, until Uni pushed deep into the WL end of the field, and kept
the Warrensburg defense scrambling to clear the ball away from their goal. Sarah
Pfander, Uni's goal keeper, saw little action at her end, with only one shot, in the
first half, for the Warrensburg attack sailing quite a ways off target. Thirty
minutes into the game, Shara Esbenshade found Michelle Wong alone in front of the
Warrensburg goal. Michelle's powerful shot was too strong for the Warrensburg goal
keeper to handle. 1-0 UNI. Just before halftime, a scramble in front of the WL goal
had Joy Shapley's shot rebound off the crossbar, as Suran Yoo made sure the ball
found the back of the net. Uni came out for the second half strong, and despite
fighting against a strong wind, the Uni team was able to minimize the attack in
front of their own goal, only allowing Warrensburg a few shots for the half. This
included a penalty kick in the 55th minute, saved by the Uni keeper, Sarah Pfander.
Warrensburg was able to find the goal in the 72nd minute after a corner kick was not
cleared, and a scramble in front of the Uni goal gave the Warrensburg attack time to
get a finishing shot off. However, Uni held on for the remaining time and the win.
FINAL: UNI (2) WARRENSBURG-LATHAM (1)

The final game of the night between the junior varsity squads also showcased two
well balanced sides. Uni scored first, when Larissa Pittenger found Revathi Maturi
in front of the WL goal. Maturi's shot deflected off a WL defender and into the goal
in the 7th minute of the game. Uni continued to attack, but could not replicate the
one goal for the half. Warrensburg had very few chances in front of the Uni goal,
but made efficient work of those few chances, scoring in the 24th minute, and
beating the Uni GK on the near post from the left side. The second half gave
Warrensburg a few more chances, and required the Uni goal keeper to come off her
line and make a number of saves to keep her team in the game. However, a rolling
shot from the Warrensburg attack was mis-judged in the 48th minute, and Warrensburg
held on for the win. FINAL: UNI JV (1) WARRENSBURG-LATHAM JV (2)
