GAME REPORT FROM COACH PHIL ANDERS

The opening sectional game for Uni brought a sense of deja vu. Last year, the Uni
girls soccer team hosted, as the higher seed in the Williamsville sectional, this
same Monticello team in a game that would be the final of the season for last years
Uni team. All was the same for this year, except the final result.
This year it is Uni that will move on to the Williamsville semi-final, after two
early goals were too much for the Monticello team to recover from.
The game began with a strong wind that threatened to influence the game. However,
playing into the wind for the first half, the team from Urbana University HS
appeared to completely disregard the wind as an obstacle. Systematically building up
play and attacking the Monticello goal, eight minutes into the game a cross from Joy
Shapley found right mid-fielder, Shara Esbenshade, running in at the back post to
easily connect with the cross for a first time shot into the back of the net. A very
solid performance from the Uni defense did not allow the Monticello attack to test
Uni goal keeper, Sarah Pfander. Twenty minutes into the game, Shapley and Esbenshade
executed an almost identical play to put their team up 2-0. The second half had both
teams challenged to maintain possession of the ball, and therefore, solid chances
for scoring were few. FINAL: URABAN-UNI (2) MONTICELLO (0)
