GAME REPORT BY COACH PHIL ANDERS

On paper both teams looked similar, with 0-0 ties against Monticello, and almost
identical 6-0 wins against Decatur Christian.

The game began with both teams looking as if they were still getting the sleep out
of their eyes for the first few minutes. Macon-Meridian began with a push from the
start into the Uni half, but after a few minutes, the Uni players seemed to get the
passing game going. A methodical buildup, and a quick attack from right forward,
Erika Belmont, had the ball played across the front of the goal to an on rushing Joy
Shapley, who made quick work of the chance. 0-1 UNI. Six minutes later, Joy returned
the favor with a beautiful cross from the left wing to Erika, who easily found the
back of the net. 0-2 UNI. The rest of the second half played out in the Macon half,
with Uni out shooting Macon, and keeping the action quiet for Uni goal keeper, Sarah
Pfander. Any hint of an attack by Macon was quickly taken care of by a solid Uni
defense consisting of Jessica Sullivan, Annie Machesky, Chelsea Freeland, and first
time starter, Sian Best. With the start of the second half, Uni made it's statement
on the game with less than a minute gone by, when Michelle Wong, supported by a Uni
team that seemed to be everywhere on the field, won the ball near the top of the
penalty box. In a brilliant solo display of skill, she side stepped the defender and
released a shot that was just out of reach for the Macon goal keeper. 0-3 UNI. Like
bookends for the half, with less than a minute to go in the game, Joy Shapley, again
attacked the left corner of the Macon penalty area, only to find herself pinned in
by two defenders. In a skillful showing of footwork, she played the ball between the
defenders, and could only be stopped by a foul from one of the defending players. A
well placed penalty kick by Shapley sealed the win for Uni. FINAL: Macon (Meridian)
