SFAC Minutes 11/27

Present: Youyang, Laura, Karolina, Eunice, Michael, Patton, Kovacs,
Bergandine, Beesly, Vaughn
Absent:Jasmine

Meeting begins at 11:45
I. Cassie Patton speaks about Code Red
-threat from inside vs. threat from outside
       -inside:
-Uni is one of the safest schools because small, everyone knows
each other, problems (emotional, dysfunctional, etc.) would be
          noticed
-highly unlikely for a student to take violence on the school
-students have better relationships with the teachers
       -outside:
         -more vulnerable than most schools
         -doors are constantly unlocked
-university library, Kenny PE, and Campus lunches/free periods
-elevated risk of someone coming in off the street
-Uni currently has a Code Red drill, which we will practice this year
because of a new law which requires it
-should be done early in the year, so people (especially subbies) know
what to do before something happens
-student lounge, one of the first floor Code Red rooms, is unsafe,
because can only be locked with a particular key which very few people
     have
-only two Code Red places on the first floor, the kitchen and student
lounge based entirely because of their sizes
-don't leave the building because you don't know if someone is outside
-    stay quiet in a room so that a shooter walking down the hallway
looking
for victims won't be attracted to you
-cell phones are allowed in school, though not turned on, for
circumstances such as this, when you are on the second or third floor,
in hiding, and since you cannot reach the Code Red alarm in the main
office on the first floor, you can call the police or office to warn
     everyone
-when the Code Red Alarm goes off, the teacher should lock the doors,
and even if a child comes banging on the door, they should not open it,
because this child could be the shooter, for all they know
-problems with safety plans, because they advise you to go to somewhere
but what if the shooter is there, ie, free period people on the first
floor are advised to go into the student lounge, but what if the
shooter is already in the student lounge?
-unlike other high schools/middle schools, our doors are almost never
locked, and students are not always in classrooms, so it is much more
difficult to "close the school down" during code red

Meeting adjourned at 12:10.
