Dave Stone's Home Page
In addition to being Ethan's dad, I teach all of the biology classes (Introductory Biology, Organismal Biology, Field Biology and Genetics and Society) at University Laboratory High School, a high school on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In the past I have been a collaborating educator, working with the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, on a projects including Biology WorkBench and Bugscope. My most recent involvement, for which I have received funding through 2009, is with BeeSpace. For the past eleven years I have served as the Teacher-Advisor for the school's ExploraVision teams.
My hobby interests tend to center around biology, dogs and computers. The leftmost picture was taken at a 1995 flyball tournament, when I ran Bullet on the Dog Training Club of Champaign-Urbana's flyball team, Hit Squad. The center left picture shows Fly performing the weave poles at a 2002 recent agility trial. The center right picture shows Ringer jumping at a 2004 DTCCU agility trial. The rightmost picture shows Blast working sheep for the first time in October, 2006.
Our 1996 team placed first in the Grades 10-12 division of the international competition. We followed in 1997, again placing first in the competiton with an all senior team. Our 1998 team placed second in the international competition. Our 1999 team placed first in the regional round of the competition, placing us in the top 12 high school teams in the international competition. Four teams received Honorable Mention in 2000, two received that honor in 2002, one received that honor in 2003, two in 2004, three in 2005 and three in 2007.
eCYBERMISSION is a web-based science, math and technology competition for 6th through 9th grade teams. During 2005, our first year in the competiton, a team comprised of four subfreshmen was awarded the eCYBERMISSION Innovation, Originality and Creativity Award, and each earned a $2000 scholarship. The same team competed the next year and was awarded the 2006 Northwest Regional Team Collaboration and Communication Award and $2000 each. Because of the large number of students interested in ExploraVision coaching I did not coach any eCYBERMISSION teams during 2006-07.

BIODIDAC is a bank of digital resources for biology teaching.
The Discovery Channel Online is an enjoyable, educational site that changes daily. Science and Nature sections are particularly well done.
The Electronic Zoo is a great resource for information regarding virtually any animal species. List-servs, newsgroups and databases are just the beginning.

Frank Potter's Science Gems is an excellent site for science teachers. It serves as a clearinghouse of software and websites pertaining to physical, earth and life sciences, mathematics and engineering. Additional sources include Martindale's Health Science Guide and Reference Desk.
