Student Activity #1: The Role of
Science in Human Rights Abuse Cases
Begin by examining web sites dealing with human rights abuses
in various countries throughout the world. An exemplary site which
is also called Project
Disappeared (http://www.desaparecidos.org/eng.html) serves
as an excellent starting point. Clicking on the underlined title
in the previous sentence will take you directly to an English
version of the main web site. Please perform the following steps
in numerical order.
- Select a country or geographic area of interest. Read a number
of the linked documents and perform other searches you believe
appropriate.
- Using the information you find, write a document outlining
the following:
- Country or geographic region of concern.
- Factions/populations involved (be certain to names of each
of the main groups, including information regarding ethnicity
and/or religious orientation of the various factions/populations).
- Type of interactions and charges against the various factions.
- Role that scientific evidence has played thus far in better
understanding/confirming the type of interactions (e.g forensic
evidence, blood type analysis, DNA analysis, etc.).
- Anticipated future role of scientific evidence in better
understanding/confirming actions.
- Be certain to include a bibliography of web resources used
in your document. Two different web page citation formats can
be found at : http://www.uni.uiuc.edu/~dstone/searchevalandcit.html
