Requirements

1. Vocabulary. The first two reading sections have a vocabulary list that includes page numbers. At the end of each section, we will have a vocabulary quiz over the words for that section.

2. Discussion questions. For class discussion, you will develop your own questions based on your reading for that day. You will share/ discuss these questions in small groups, then each group will share questions with the class. You will turn in your questions each day (10 points). You will be graded individually on the quality and thought of your questions as well as the grammatical correctness of the questions.

You will compose six question for each reading assignment, two of each of the kinds listed below. Some examples for the “Prologue” follow. Your study questions will be your study guide for this test, so make your questions good ones and don’t be afraid to ask for help on passages you don’t get.

Questions of Fact

·        Focus on details from the text.

·        Ask about people, places, and things.

·        Choose surface questions for others to answer.

Example: What is Jim Nightshade’s address?

Questions of Interpretation

·        Focus on meanings that the text communicates.

·        Ask about symbols, themes, and underlying messages.

·        Choose deeper questions for others to answer.

Example: What is the significance of Halloween coming early?

Questions That Are Open Ended

·        Focus on moving beyond the text.

·        Ask about future effects or implications.

·        Choose open-ended questions for others to answer.

Example: What things make you “never so young anymore”?

3. Test. On May 23 we will have a test over this book. The test will draw upon the questions you generate in class, will be partially objective, and will have an essay question that will require a focused, developed answer.
