DTC of C-U Agility II

The Dog Training Club of Champaign-Urbana offers Agility II classes during Summer 2000 on Fridays from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM, June 30 to August 25. Dogs in this class will be expected to have completed Agility I or equivalent. All dogs must have passed an AKC Canine Good Citizen Test and must have completed at least one Novice obedience class prior to taking this class. Agility II is limited to eight dog-handler teams and has three instructors: Donna Claypool, Chris Mayer and Dave Stone. Class meetings are tentatively planned to take place in a number of different locations including, but not restricted to, the Uni High Athletic Field, the DTC of C-U Training Building and the Stone residence (803 E. Olympian Road, Urbana, IL). Weekly activities are based in part on the exercises found in Clean Run Productions' Intermediate Agility Workbook (http://www.cleanrun.com/moreinfo.cfm?Product_ID=39), though we often change activities to better suit our equipment and facilities, as well as our dog-handler team needs.

Since the class is offered during the summer and we assume that the dogs will be going to matches in the near future, we will expect dogs-handler teams to bring crates or exercise pens to each class so that dogs can get used to being crated next to each other in an agility situation. Additionally, this will free up handlers so that they will be able to walk courses (and pieces of courses) without their dogs prior to running them. Each dog handler-team should bring an agility trialing kit consisting of the following to each class meeting:

  1. 6' Lead
  2. Buckle or Quick Release Collar - no pinch or slip collars!!!
  3. Water Container with Fresh Water
  4. Water Bowl
  5. Bag of Treats (hot dogs or some other smelly, soft food item)
  6. Baggies for Clean Up
  7. Container in which everything will fit and be easily accessible

We will have a sign-up at the first class meeting so that each handler will have opportunity to assist in equipment set-up twice during the eight week session. Class will end promptly at 7:30 PM, at which time the instructors will have time to work their own dogs. The 7:30 - 8 PM time slot is the working perk for the Agility II instructors. You're welcome to stay and watch (after all, we like you!), but please don't ask to join in since Chris, Dave and Donna will have a series of exercises that they hope to complete each week during that time. Of course, Agility II students will not be asked to assist in breakdown of equipment at the end of the 7:30 to 8 PM instructor training session.

Decisions regarding the location of our training will be made by 3 PM the day of each class. Decisions will always be in part weather-based since the safety of the dogs is always our primary concern. The location of each class meeting will be accessible from this page or can be obtained by calling the Stone residence (643-7622) between 5 and 5:30 PM on the day of each class meeting.
