Name: Dave Stone
Amount Requested: $1100
Time Frame: Award would allow me to attend the Tenth Annual Forensic Science Educational Conference (June 22-24, 2006)
Narrative Description:
The following description is taken from the conference web page (http://www.aafs.org/default.asp?section_id=meetings&page_id=fs_educational_conference/IUPUI):
"The three-day conference is designed to provide instruction to secondary school science educators on the use of the scientific method in the investigation of crime.
Each of the three days of the conference will be built around a forensic science theme: Day 1 will cover the comparative forensic sciences and will include fingerprints, shoeprints/tire treads, questioned documents, and some aspects of imaging and forensic engineering. Day 2 will be devoted to forensic biology and will include DNA, serology, blood spatter, pathology, anthropology, and entomology. Day 3 will focus on forensic chemistry and will include drugs, toxicology, microscopy, and trace evidence such as hairs, fibers, paints, and glass.
Each day will include lectures and hands-on workshops conducted by AAFS specialists in various fields that will introduce the teachers to experiments and exercises that are age- and grade appropriate and which involve a minimum of cost to set up and to run. There will also be sessions on best practices conducted by master teachers, as well as a session on how to set up a mock crime scene. The last day will end with a mock trial, which will demonstrate how scientific testimony is presented in a courtroom and how teachers can involve their students by playing roles such as prosecutor, defense attorney, and/or expert."
Funds will be used to cover the cost of conference attendance, transportation to and from the conference, housing at the IUPUI (Indianapolis) Conference Center and Hotel, parking and meals.
This proposal meets the second goal of the fund as outlined in the Stoddard Faculty Support Endowment Fund Gift Agreement:
2) Support for Uni High faculty members to explore new dimensions
in writing, travel, or technology, and to broaden cross-disciplinary
curricular initiatives as they relate to their teaching.
